50 Year Anniversary of Breast Implant Surgery

SCOTTSDALE, AZ--(Marketwire - Aug 7, 2012) - The field of plastic surgery is celebrating the 50 year anniversary of silicone breast implants that are used in breast augmentation as well as breast reconstruction surgery. In those fifty years, numerous major technological advancements have been made as a result of the painstaking work and unwavering dedication of countless scientists and doctors seeking the "perfect" breast implant.

The first breast implant procedure was performed by Dr. Thomas Cronin and Dr. Frank Gerow in Houston. This team developed an implant consisting of a thick silicone gel encased in a silicone rubber lining -- a revolutionary design that far superseded in quality and results all other materials that had preceded it. Since that time, breast implants as well as the breast augmentation procedure, in general, have continued their evolution to become safer and with results that look and feel more natural. According to the most recent study from the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), more than 316,000 breast augmentation procedures were performed in 2011 -- a clear indication of the major and positive impact of this surgery and the associated silicone breast implant.
